Buffalo, NY – The Buffalo Museum of Science (BMS) today introduced app-based challenges to enhance its “12 Months of Science” initiative, a year-long effort to explore different science topics with visitors in 2025. Each month, the Museum will offer daily science demos and stage shows that provide a new engaging museum experience with every visit.
January is Science Sleuth Month at the BMS, providing museum guests to put on their detective hats to solve mysteries through the process of science. Guests are invited to decipher codes, identify mystery chemical compounds, and discover the worlds of the past through anthropological artifacts during daily demos and stage shows that are included with Museum admission.
In the spirit of sleuthing, the Museum is bolstering the 12 Months of Science experience for guests by introducing free app-based challenges with opportunities to win prizes for exploring the museum’s exhibits and participating in a variety of 12 Months of Science activities and monthly programs. The challenges are available through the free Eventzee app available through the Apple App Store and Google Play starting January 1. New themed challenges will be introduced for all 12 months.
There are three separate app pathways designed for ages and interests. One points-based challenge for chances to win prizes, and two additional challenges for add-on experiences: one designed for families with younger children, and a more advanced challenge for teens and adults. App registrants can participate in all three.
- Science Buff Points Challenge (points-based challenge for everyone)
Museum guests can earn points by simply visiting the Museum, checking into daily demos, Stage Shows, and other events offered throughout the 12 Months of Science with a new set of challenges released each month. Completing each challenge will earn the player 2 to 25 points, and any app registrant that earns 100 points or more by December 31, 2025, will be entered into a raffle to win prizes. The top scorer will win a BMS prize package valued at $500 that includes a membership, free event tickets, swag and more. - Science Seekers Adventure (self-led experience for families)
This family-friendly challenge provides opportunities for guests of all ages to experience the Museum in a more interactive way by completing fun photo, video, and trivia challenges with their smartphone coinciding with the monthly theme, with new challenges added every month. Guests will have the ability to go back and complete challenges from previous months. Digital badges can be earned by completion of challenges. - Escape the Museum (self-led experience for teens and adults)
The more challenging “Escape the Museum” experience offers teens and adults an opportunity to sharpen their problem-solving skills. Rather than locked doors of a traditional escape room, participants embark on an intensive exploration of specific museum exhibits and use their research skills and resourcefulness to solve the puzzles within a set time period. If guests can solve all of the clues within the time limit, they’ll earn a digital badge.
BMS President and CEO Gary Siddall said the 12 Months of Science and the new app-based Challenge Series adds to the mission of the Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences to inspire joyful exploration of science. “Some often confuse science with the subjects we learned in school, when really science is the process of pursuing new knowledge. The 12 Months of Science initiative offers opportunities to explore interactive exhibits and engage with our talented staff in new and different ways than a traditional museum visit and create a new experience with every visit this year.”
The challenges can be accessed with an access code provided at the BMS admissions desk with paid museum admission or membership. All three challenges are available through December 31, 2025, at 4 p.m.
