Buffalo Museum of Science Brings Space Closer to Home, Unveils New ‘Buffalo in Space’ Science Studio

By August 21, 2017July 19th, 2018No Comments

BUFFALO, NY (August 21, 2017) – Physically immense and distant, outer space may feel like an abstract concept from which we are disconnected. But space isn’t “out there” – we’re a part of it right here in Western New York. Today, the Buffalo Museum of Science unveiled its newest science studio, Buffalo in Space, bringing space a little closer to home for the citizens of Buffalo. The studio showcases the exciting story of space, framing the science in a way that inspires curiosity and enjoyment for visitors of all ages.

Buffalo In Space highlights current research, shares regional stories and shines a spotlight on achievements in aerospace by Western New York companies. Inside the science studio, guests are able to:

  • Scroll through the light years between planets in our solar system
  • Explore the size and scale of planets in relation to our moon
  • Chart the path of space debris circling the Earth
  • Construct and test a paper rocket
  • Learn about the space and aerospace-related careers available in Western New York

“Space is the greatest – and wildest – of all possible frontiers, but it often fees too big to understand. We created Buffalo in Space to provide a hands-on, engaging experience that helps guests connect to space and see it from the perspective of the city of Buffalo, our planet and even our galaxy,” said Marisa Wigglesworth, President & CEO of the Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences. “We’re thrilled to offer this new science studio to our guests and members as we continue to transform the Buffalo Museum of Science into a premier scientific exploration and learning institution.”

Buffalo In Space is the eighth and final exhibit that completes the five-year transformation of all of the Buffalo Museum of Science’s galleries. The studio, located on the Museum’s fourth floor and previously home to Our Place in Space, is part of the final phase of the See it Through campaign, which also includes the restoration of the Kellogg Observatory.

In addition to the grand opening of Buffalo in Space on August 21, the Museum also debuted a new on-site retail experience – Elements Shop. Located on the first floor next to the National Geographic 3D cinema, Elements Shop offers Museum gifts, as well as educational toys, kits and equipment from partner Scientifics Direct. Buffalo Museum of Science members can enjoy 10% off all Elements Shop merchandise.

Admission to Buffalo in Space is included with general museum admission ($11 adults, $9 seniors 62+, $9 students and military with ID, $8 children 2-17) and free for Museum members and children under 2. The science studio is open during regular museum hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days a week). The Museum is offering special extended hours (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and reduced price admission ($10 for families and $5 for individuals, members admitted free with proof of membership) on August 21 to celebrate the grand opening.
