All-new Professional Development Workshops
Teacher workshops are led by BMS and Tifft science and education experts and are aligned with NYS Learning Standards. Workshops will encourage hands-on and inquiry-based learning while focusing on a variety of content areas. All workshops will provide CTLE Professional Development credits.

May 3 & May 7, 2025 – Main Street Astronomy: Understanding Earth’s Place in Space
For generations, humans all around the world have turned to the sky as an essential resource for timekeeping, survival, creativity, and culture. In this two-part workshop, you’ll learn how Earth fits into our solar system and discover that you don’t need advanced technology to make meaningful observations of space. Explore the series of fortunate and unlikely circumstances that have allowed Earth to support and protect life and gain the skills to use the sky as a map, a clock, and a canvas for the imagination.
- Part 1: Saturday, May 3 (10 a.m. – 2 p.m.)
- Part 2: Wednesday, May 7 (7:30 – 9:30 p.m.)
- 6 CTLE hours
- $90/person
- Participants will receive 2 passes to BMS and $1 off per student if they book a self-guided field trip to BMS

June 7, 2025 – Great Lakes Science (at Tifft Nature Preserve)
Discover the dynamic water cycle of our Great Lakes region, water quality issues, aquatic habitats, and the wildlife within them through FUN, hands-on activities that can be applied to your classroom and beyond. We’ll dip-net for live, local aquatic invertebrates, test for water quality, showcase our Enviroscape Watershed model, and so much more! This indoor and outdoor CTLE Workshop is appropriate for anyone interested in local freshwater aquatic ecology and will cover many facets from basic water science and aquatic animal adaptations to the water cycle and human impact upon aquatic ecosystems.

October 1, 2025 – STEAM in the Schoolyard (at Tifft Nature Preserve)
Connect your classroom curriculum to any greenspace outside your school! Whether you have one tree or a courtyard full, come play with us while we explore simple cross-curricular, nature-based activities that can be applied to your classroom. We will explore nature journaling, math in nature, basic local wildlife and plants ecology of the schoolyard, and much more! This indoor and outdoor CTLE Workshop is appropriate for anyone interested in implementing your school outdoor space once or regularly throughout your school year for grades K to high school.

October 25, 2025 – Backyard Geology
From Niagara Falls to the shores of Lake Erie, learn about Western New York’s ancient past. Examine the geologic processes that have shaped the region over the last billion years. Participants will explore rocks and fossils and make connections between the geologic past and the present-day inhabitants of Western New York through hands-on activities perfect for their classrooms.
